The fine weather of September was a welcome bonus for the Farrington Park Ladies as they finish this year’s competitions before October’s AGM.

Mara’s Morning, a qualifying Stableford competition, held in memory of Mara Sheppard, attracted a field of 39 and the scoring was very good. Two spot birdies were scored at all the par 3 holes except the 5th; June Symonds (8th), Rosi Brown, Jenny Howarth scored at the 15th whilst Jackie Walker had a birdie at 10th and 15th.

Ten players had 36 points or more and countback had to be employed when five ladies scored 38 points to determine second and third places. Jenny Ahlberg took second place ahead of third placed Jackie Walker, who beat June Symonds, Fiona Hassard and Lo Dallocco into the minor places. The

Mara’s Morning trophy winner, with a great score of 42 points, was Jill

Holland.

The Committee Cup is a 4 Ball Better Ball competition played off a course handicap allowance of 85%. Again, the scoring was high, with only one team amongst the fifteen pairs scoring fewer than 36 points. Nine teams scored more than 40 points and must have been disappointed to find their good score wasn’t good enough to win the Cup. Gail Proctor and Wendy Butt scored 47 points for second place, one point ahead of third placed Carol Jones and the previous week’s champion, Jill Holland. The winners, Marilyn Cass and Lesley Mannion are fairly new to golf, but they had the round of their short golfing careers, to record their first trophy win with an amazing 48 points.

Unfortunately, the weather deteriorated on the morning of the Betty Beadle’s Bake greensomes competition. The eighteen teams got soaking wet and were buffeted about by strong winds but they all played on, determined to finish their rounds in honour of the much loved Betty Beadle. Betty loved a Greensomes competition and as well as being a fine player, putting was her strong forte; she was a wonderful cake maker. Any player knew that if they were playing with Betty, they would be eating slices of her fine cakes after nine holes.

Third place went to Kay Clarke and Sandra Hares with 37 points on countback, beating Rosi Brown and Lo Dallocco, Jane Ball and Sue Barnes into fourth and fifth places respectively. Denise Baker and Corrina Bates took second place with 39 points, but the winners scored two points better. Lesley Stone and Carol King lifted the coveted Betty Beadle Bake trophy with 41 points.
