The enforced break due to the pandemic has had an amazing effect of the fortunes of treasurer, Geoff Hallett in the Seniors’ section of Fosseway Golf Club. Not content with winning the first event after lockdown – the April Medal, he then proceeded to top the pile in the January Medal and followed it up by lifting the Don Shearn Trophy. Not many people in the long history of the Seniors’ section can have won three successive competitions.
Hallett’s nett total of 64 in the April Medal saw him finish two shots clear of Howard Nowell, with retiring skipper, Gerry Rowell, third with a nett 67. The Treasurer’s January Medal success was far more conclusive. His nett result of 59 was six shots better than runner-up, Graham Edgell and third placed Doug Lane, with Edgell ahead of Lane on countback.
It was a pleasure to see Don Shearn’s widow, Edna at the competition in memory of her husband. The Stableford event saw Hallett come first with 40 points, followed by Secretary, Alan Jones on 38 and John Bendle on 37.
There was some sad news for members returning to action when it was revealed that Head Greenkeeper, George Bidmead, was leaving for a new challenge at Wells Golf Club. George had endeared himself to all the senior members and did a marvellous job in keeping the course up together. The Seniors made a presentation to him and wished him every success in the future.
