Looking ahead to the forthcoming season, the Club Diary demonstrates that Mendip Golf Club provides a great deal of competitive golf for its Men’s section.
Between March and October, there are eleven individual cups to be played for, nine singles Stableford events and twelve team events. In addition, there is the Mendip Open Week, this year commencing Sunday, 5th June, consisting of mainly team events, but this year, including a Singles event on Wednesday, 8th June. On top of this, winter competitions are in good supply during the November – February period.
The Ladies event, this week, was a nine hole, three clubs and a putter event played in horrible wet and windy conditions. The eventual winner was new member, Nichola Croft, with twenty points, followed by another new lady member, Caroline Simpler, with seventeen points and in third place, Anita Butcher, with sixteen points.
At the recent Captains’ Drive-In Event, the 2015 Club Captain, Martin Wilkins, made his final presentation to the charity that he and the club members had been supporting during the year. A cheque for £14,368 was received from Martin by Lydia McGivern, the Community Fundraiser for the Forever Friends Appeal, raising funds towards building a pioneering new Cancer Centre at the Bath Royal United Hospital.
Lydia said she and her team were overwhelmed with the support they had received from Mendip Golf Club and she was delighted that the 2016 Club Captain, David Williams, had also chosen this Appeal as one of the two charities that he proposed supporting in 2016. The Ladies Section, through Ladies Captain Hilary Rowdon, also proposed supporting this charity in 2016.
Of course, one of the highlights of Mendip’s Charity Support is the annual Captain’s Charity Day, this year being held on Thursday, 14th July, when so many players from other clubs enter teams to support whatever charity has been chosen by the Club Captain. The 2015 Charity Day was a little special, as Wells Golf Club member, Micky Currell, playing in the R. H. Windows Team, holed his tee shot on the twelfth hole to win himself (shared with his team) a brand new Mini, the ‘hole in one’ competition being sponsored by Wellsway BMW and Mini of Bath.
