THE Coronation Cup at Mendip Golf Club attracted 150 players on a hot and sunny weekend.

Winning the event with a nett 66 was Richard Clifford, closely followed by Jack Vowell, playing off scratch, with a new course record of gross 67, nett 67.

Jack’s front nine of 5 under par 32, set the round up nicely, with an eagle and 4 birdies, with a bogey on hole 7. Coming home in 35, Jack bogeyed the tricky 18th hole to finish with a 67 gross.

Fifty-nine players competed in the August Mid-Week Stableford, with Kevin Bucklet winning with 41 points on countback from Charlie Petheram and Brad Pike.

Forty-two ladies played in the Ladies Stableford, with a fabulous score of 45 points from Margaret Seery, followed by Susan Forshaw with 42 points, and three players also with 41 points.

Forty ladies played a 9 hole Stableford in hot conditions with Ann Padley returning a fine 22 points, closely followed by Libby Bellew, Nola Russell, Christine Williams, Fran Davies and Linda Papdopoullos, all with 21 points.

The winner of the August Mid-Week Stableford was Jenny Merrett with 36 points.

Club president John Shakesby qualified to play in the England Golf ‘Race to Woodhall Spa’ Grand Final and finished runner-up, with a fine score of 38 points over the famed Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa. The hard and fast ground conditions suited his game with the ball running miles and he managed to miss most of the several thousand deep bunkers!

The Mixed Friendly team played at Long Ashton on Sunday, 9th August. The fairways were as dry and hard as Mendip's and the balls ran off in all directions down the slopes. However, the Mendip team battled hard. One pair lost, one pair won and the remaining five matches were drawn, giving a drawn match result of 3.5 points each.

The Ladies Friendly team hosted Wheathill on Friday 7th August. Illness prevented both teams from fielding a full complement, but the match went ahead with four pairings each. Wheathill ladies had lower handicaps than the home team, but home advantage told and Mendip won 3-1.

The Avalon A team played their last home game of the season against Oake Manor Sycamores, with Mendip A winning 3 - 2. Again 3 matches went to the 18th hole but for the first time this season the A team faired best.

The Alliance B team played at home against Orchardleigh Golf Club on Monday, 10th August, winning by 9 points to 5.

After a two-week hiatus of Seniors friendly matches, on another baking hot summers afternoon, Mendip Seniors welcomed Yeovil for another "return fixture". The home team performed admirably on a dry course, still playing fair, with excellent greens after the recent rigorous maintenance program. Looking to overturn a 2-4 away defeat the home team came out 5-1 winners, resulting in a rewarding aggregate 7-5 victory.

Mendip Seniors welcomed Wells Seniors in the return fixture of this annual "local derby". Holding a 4-2 lead from the first leg, the visitors sent a team to whom the hosts, based on average handicap index, were giving an average 4 shots per man. Alas this, added to the sapping heat and a dry course resulted in a 4-2 defeat. This was captain Paul Godwin's first home loss of the year resulting in an aggregate defeat of 4-8.
