Mendip Ladies’ Medal saw some excellent scoring in Division 1, where, after a close fought battle, Jean Padfield was declared the winner with a net 74, on countback from Marian Speed.
In third place, one shot behind, was Aimee Sawyer. Jean, therefore, becomes the holder of the Centenary Plate. The Division 2 ladies found good scores harder to come by with Elaine Richardson winning with a net 86 and she was followed by Sandie Roper, with 89 and Trish Murphy, with 90.
The Ladies’ Cup Competition, the Reid Trophy, was played in cold and blustery conditions, totally out of character with a June day. Of the 24 competitors, only the winner bettered Par, this being Chris Down, who scored an excellent 38 points. In second place was Elaine P. Richardson (not to be confused with Elaine Richardson!), with 32 points, with Linda Brobson third, with 31 after countback from Liz Rose.
The Ladies’ Friendly Team entertained Yeovil with the match ending in a 2–2 draw. Mendip’s wins came from Sandie Roper and Wendy Norman and Nichola Croft and Elaine Richardson.
The Seniors held their annual running of the Ollie Parfitt Cup, the only medal event in their calendar. The early starters in a full field were fairly lucky with the weather, but as the morning progressed, the storms became more frequent and torrential. Needless to say the best scores came earlier in the day. Winning the cup with a fine net 66 was a resurgent Phil Bendall, three ahead of second placed John Cross, who beat Keith Beasley on countback.
The Seniors, on a glorious sunny afternoon entertained Bristol and Clifton and enjoying this welcome burst of summer weather, recorded a 5½–1½ victory. Mendip’s winners were Seniors’ Captain, David Pilbeam and Bob Clark, Colin Davies and Hugh Campbell, Henry Banks and Adam Spragg, Jim Roebuck and Andy Frampton and Alan Edwards and Ian Fussell. The following day, Mendip visited Worlebury, but this time came to grief 2–4 with the only Mendip win coming from the strong pairing of Bryan Lewis and Jim Scott.
And finally in their third match in close succession, Mendip welcomed Enmore. The visitors found the course in excellent order, although the match was played in light rain. It resulted in a win for Enmore, 4½–3½. Victorious for Mendip were Club Captain, David Williams and Andy Frampton and Nick Inskip and Simon Atkinson, with the pairings of Bryan Lewis and John Brooksbank, Alan Fussell and Jim Roebuck and Henry Banks and Mike Sharp halving their matches.
The C & B Society, based at Mendip, held their annual Captain’s away day at Enmore. An excellent event was put on by the Society Captain, Hugh Campbell, thoroughly enjoyed by the 18 attendees. Winning the Captain’s Cup was Merlyn Saunders, with 34 points on countback from Adrian Brooking Clark, with Tony Williams third with 33. In the drawn teams competition, the winners were ABC and Merlyn (first and second in the individual’s event – what a good draw!) and Brian Barton with Tony Williams and Mike Curtis and Ron Irons in second place.
