This week saw the running of the Men’s annual Mendip Medal Bowmaker event.
Well supported, the contest was closely fought with the third-placed team of I. Stolworthy/A. Fussell/M. Myers, recording net 133, beating by one shot the team of S. Pearson/J. Bolt/J. Harvey, but clear winners, five shots ahead, with a fine 17 under par score of 125, were B. Rawlings/S. Pocock/R. Millard.
The Men’s Avalon C Team kept up their fine record with a 3-2 victory away to Wheathill C. Winners for Mendip were Team Captain, M. Srawley/L. Phillips and S. Butland/S. Pocock, with T. Logan/P. Moores and C. Butland/D. Lewer gaining halves.
The Ladies’ Alliane A Team fought for a gallant halved match when visiting a strong Mendip Springs Team. There were wins for Jan Fukuyama and Vi Hayes and halves gained by Aimee Sawyer, Gill Brown and Fran Davies.
The Ladies held their ever popular Invitation Day. The early starters enjoyed fine weather, but as the day progressed, the weather Gods deserted the ladies and the later players got very wet. In third place was Caroline Simper and her guest Linda McHugh from Bath, with 39 points and losing on countback to Edwina Willis and her guest from Bridport, Julie Oliver. However winning, with 41 points, were Jenny Merrett and her guest Jan Light from Orchardleigh.
The Ladies Reid Cup event, held in most un-summer like weather which made playing conditions most tricky, saw a fine win for Chris Down, with 38 points, well clear of second placed Elaine P. Richardson, with 32, leaving Linda Brobson third, with 31 after countback.
The Seniors’ latest monthly competition saw a large entry of sixty-five players. With the course in splendid order in readiness for the upcoming ladies County Week, still only five players recorded par or better scores. Winning, with 39 points, was Bryan Lewis with the two form players, Adrian Brooking Clark and Chris Bryant filling the second and third positions, with 37 and 36 respectively.
The Seniors fought a close battle when home to Burnham and Berrow, finally coming out on top 4½ - 3½. Winning pairs for Mendip were Seniors’ Captain, David Pilbeam/Club Captain, David Williams, Pete Rumming/John Shakesby, John Stembridge/Tony Taylor and Norman Squire/Rod Dyson with Chris Bryant and Colin Davies gaining a half.
Another close match ensued when the Seniors visited Bath, with the final result 3-3. Winners this time were Nick Inskip/Mike Sharp, Bryan Lewis/Peter Letts with halves from David Pilbeam/Alan Evans Jones and Henry Banks/Jim Scott.
