112 people competed in Mendip’s annual running of the Coronation Cup, where all three divisions resulted in close finishes.

In Division Three, the winner was Richard Moon, who beat Peter Walsh on count back – both recording 71. Division Two went to Charlie Salter, with an equal best of the day (69), with Brian Smith in second place on 70, beating Hugh Glandfield on count back.

Division One went to Wayne Black on 70, with Thomas Chapman second on 71 beating, again after count back, Trevor Foster. However, the Cup Winner who came from Division Three was Paul Drew, with a 69 but with a one-shot-better back nine than Charlie Salter.

The Ladies held a very successful Open Bowmaker, with a full field of entrants representing many different Clubs. The first Visitors prize, not for the first time, went to the very strong team of Sharon Watts and Amanda Mayne of Saltford, and Lesley Moore of Stockwood Vale, who scored 75. Second were a team from Rushmore/Cumberwell, with 74, and third were a team from Minchinhampton, with 73.

Best Mendip Team were Dee Garnsworthy/Lynn Cox/Nichola Croft, with by far the best score of the day (83), with Jo Espley/Jenny Merrett/Linda Brobson in third place with 74. The Ladies’ Handicap Secretary needs to be sharpening her pencil, I think.

The Ladies, having reached the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup for the first time in several years, came up against a strong Worlebury Team, and playing on a course that probably did not play to Mendip’s strengths – Minehead. After a valiant fight, only Lulu Carolan managed to win her game, and that on the 20th hole.

The Ladies Inter Club Team went down to a 2.5-4.5 defeat when visiting Wheathill. Wins were recorded by Diane Stanton and Margaret Allen, with Margaret Hawker gaining a Half.

The Seniors kept their recent run of success going with two wins this week. Against Bath they recorded a 4.5-1.5 win. Successful for Mendip were Terry Carter/Nick Inskip, Seniors’ Captain Henry Banks playing with Club President Colin Davies, John Cross/Andy Frampton, Peter Letts/Brian Say, with Richard Harris/Les Kew gaining a Half.

Against Orchardleigh, Mendip were again victorious, this time 4-3. Mendip winners were Simon Atkinson/Jim Mallon, Henry Banks/Alan Evans-Jones, Bob Smallcombe/Merlyn Saunders and Norman Squire/Mike Snaith.
