Mendip’s Men’s Mid-week Tankard saw a very close finish in Division One, with the top three players all recording 37 points. After count-back, Scott Butland emerged victorious, with Will Waddington second and Chris Butland third.
Division Two went to Simon Wheeler with 35 points, followed by Philip Moores with 33 and Chris Phillips with 32. Division Three saw the best score of the day, with Paul Wood scoring 39, followed by Andy Griffiths with 36 and Ian Tinsley with 31.
112 Competitors played for the Sims Cup, and against CSS of 72, there was some excellent scoring, with fine weather – the greens coming back to condition after the recent winter work. Division Three saw a return to form for Club President Colin Davies, who returned a net 67, followed by Rowly Williams with 68 and Glynn Haddock with 69.
Division Two went to Frank Barnes, another to record his best performance of the season with an excellent net 65, with John Harvey second with 66, beating Mark Necker on count-back.
Division One went to Neil Clarke with 67, followed by Steve Rawlings, second with 68, and Tom Lowe, playing off three, was third with 69. However, no-one could get near the Cup Winner, Paul Apfelstedt, playing in Division Two off a handicap of eleven. Paul recorded a net 62, or to put it another way, a gross score of one over CSS. Paul played the final seven holes in two under par. No doubt his best ever performance, and one that will surely last in the memory for some time to come.
The Mens’ Avalon C Team met an unexpected setback, going down 1½-3½ when entertaining Vivary Park. A win came from Thomas Chapman/Malcolm Srawley, with Chris Butland/D. Allen gaining a half. Better was to come however, where Mendip Spring recorded a 3½-1½ victory. Wins this time came from Tom Lowe/Chris Butland, Scott Butland/D. Allen, Ryan Sainsbury/C. Copp, with a half from Thomas Chapman/Malcolm Srawley.
The Ladies held a qualifying Medal, and the difficult conditions saw CSS rise to 79. However, there were two exceptional scores. In Silver Division, Elaine Richardson was third with a net 85, Anne Hopkins was second with 83, but the division was won with an outstanding net 72 from Jan Fukuyama.
Bronze Division went to Margaret Allen with 81, with Nichola Croft second with 82, and Libby Bellew third with 83. Copper Division went to Dee Garnsworthy with another excellent score of 72, with Elaine Richardson second with 84 and Margaret Shrimpton third.
A full-strength Ladies’ Alliance A Team recorded a fine 13-1 victory over Farrington, with wins from Aimee Sawyer, Gill Brown, Jinhee Page, Marian Speed, Fran Davies and Vi Hayes, with Ladies’ Captain Patricia Rawlins gaining a half.
In the Somerset County Silver Meeting held at Orchardleigh, CSS rose to 76, and the competition became a reduction-only event. Mendip’s Aimee Sawyer was runner-up in the Gross event with an 83, and Linda Brobson won the net event with a fine 72.
The Seniors beat local rivals, Wells, 5-2 to continue their fine run.Wins for Mendip came from Henry Banks/David Cox, Brian Say/John Brooksbank, Bob Smallcombe/Adrian Brooking Clark, John Shakesby/Martin Osborne and Phillip Cookson/Peter Rumming.
