After many years, Mendip has a team in the Somerset Junior League.
The format has changed over the years, and the twelve clubs now entered all play on the same individual and eTeam basis, split into three handicap categories, which is an encouragement for Juniors of all abilities to compete. There are four events planned for this season, with the first played at Taunton & Pickeridge.
Team Captain, Ellen Reakes, played extremely well to score 34 points, only missing out on third place on countback in Division One, with Sam Pepler just behind with 32 points.
Daisy Jeffery picked up valuable points for Mendip by finishing second in Division Three, with Connie Cox in third also picking up a point. New Junior, Ffion Richardson, finished on the same number of points as Connie, just missing out on countback. So after one event, Burnham top the Competition with six points, with Mendip equal on second with three points.
Mendip’s Spring Open Bowmaker attracted a good entry with visitors representing seventeen Clubs. The winning visitors team from Long Sutton scored 79 points, with a combined Burnham and Bath Team second with 78 on countback from teams from Enmore and Clevedon. The Mendip Members’ prize went to Kelvin Lumb/Derek Strudwick/Alan Edwards with 83 points, with Troy Chivers/ George Hobbs and Farrington member, Steve Hobbs, second with 79.
The Ladies held a qualifying Stableford with 41 Ladies playing. Silver Division was won by Marian Speed with 36 points, while Jean Padfield was second with 32 on countback from Anne Hopkins. Bronze Division went to Diane Stanton with 35, with Joan Clark second with 32 on countback from Karen Cookson. Copper Division was won by Ann Padley with 37, with Wendy Norman second with 34 and Gina Howard with 32.
The Seniors played Kingsdown and lost a closely-fought match, 3-4. Winners for Mendip were Mike Snaith/Martin Lambert, Philip Moores/Jim Mallon and Nick Inskip /Stephen Smith. However, in the Somerset Seniors’ Scratch KO competition, Mendip recorded a resounding 5-0 victory over Burnham in a match played at Long Sutton. Mendip winners were Ian Perkins, Chris Lindley, Martin Myers, Brian Lewis and Steve Davis. Brian’s cause was helped by a ‘hole-in-one’!
Mendip entertained Farrington in their latest Mixed Match. The weather was bright and sunny and the visitors were very complimentary about the Mendip course and its condition. Mendip just shaded the result 4.5-3.5. There were wins for John Rackham, playing in his first mixed match partnering Liz Rose, David and Anne Collins, Alan and Pauline Williams, with Rob and Sue Needham gaining a half.
The latest Pro Shop Nearest the Pin competition saw a very large entry and a victory for Richard Jeffrey, with John Ellis second and Scott Butland third.
