Mendip’s Men’s Avalon C Team visited Wedmore and gained an honourable half. Wins came from Scott Butland/Dani Annable and Malcolm Srawley/Paul Reakes, with Ryan Sainsbury and Clive Copp gaining a half. They then visited Burnham and gained a fine 4-1 win.
This time, wins came from Tom Lowe/Chris Butland, Dani Annable/Scott Butland and Ryan Sainsbury/Clive Copp, with valuable halves from Tom Chapman/Phil Leadbeater and Malcolm Srawley/Duncan Offer. This puts them in a strong position to win promotion this year.
Mendip held their second Open Bowmaker in three weeks, and after a sell-out for the first event, they were delighted to attract 87 entrants to the second event. The First Visitors’ prize went to a Farrington Team consisting of two two-handicappers and a three-handicap player. In excellent playing conditions, they carded a fine 84 points.
In second place with 83 were a Henbury/Taunton and Pickeridge pairing supported by home player, Tony Williams, and in third place, a Long Ashton team with 82. The winning Mendip Team, with an amazing 88 points, were Thomas Richardson, aged twelve, and a young friend from Tidworth, and Tom’s father, Craig Richardson, with Paul Reakes/Tony Logan/Steve Whalen second with 83 on countback from Malcolm Srawley/Phil Leadbeater/Tom Lowe.
The annual Lady Captain’s Day saw a fine gathering of 42 Ladies who, with their traditional shotgun start, enjoyed an excellent day’s golf with lovely on-course refreshments arranged by Ladies’ Captain, Marian Speed. Events moved onto the clubhouse, where the competitors enjoyed Ryan’s excellent buffet, a fun quiz and much merriment well into the evening.
The Cooper Goblet for Silver Division players went to Jo Espley, with the Gladys Shepherd Trophy for Bronze Division very deservedly being won by Nola Russell. Everyone was so pleased to see this, bearing how much work Nola does for the club, not only on the Competitions and Handicaps side, but also helping in the office.
The Team Bowmaker went to Nola, Anita Butcher and Andrea Williams with 80 points, with Edwina Willis, Sue Alcock and Pippa Brown second with 78 and Fran Davies, Libby Bellew and Elaine Richardson third with 75. Well done, Marian – a great day enjoyed by all.
Aimee Sawyer and Ellen Reakes finally saw their great run in the Bristol and District Scratch Foursomes come to an end in the Semi-Final, losing on the 16th to a Long Ashton pair of scratch golfers, who both play in the Gloucestershire County First Team. Well done, girls, for running them so close.
The Seniors’ Avalon Team went to League-leaders, Enmore, and ran them very close, finally losing 2-3. Wins came from Kevin Carmody/Mike Snaith and Tony Taylor/Philip Moores.
A Junior nine-hole competition saw a win for Josh Seviour with a fine 23 points; Connie Cox was second with 21, Ellen Reakes third with 20 and Daisy Jeffrey fourth with 15. Nearest the Pin saw a win for Oliver Saunder, with Sam Scriven second and Scott Butland third.
