THE PGA in Gloucestershire & Somerset have held a winter medal at Mendip Golf Club.
The Professionals enjoyed the course in fine order with many great comments about the course. Winning with a score of 5 under par 66 was Alistair Balcombe from Tickenham Golf Centre. Runner up was Edward Goodwin from Lilleybrook Golf Club with a score of 70, 1 under par.
During 2025, Men’s Club Captain, Jack Hayes, and Ladies Club Captain, Louise Scott, were raising money for Mind in Somerset as their chosen charity. A fabulous year, with many great fundraising initiatives held, resulted in a fabulous £12,306.62 being raised.
Huge congratulations go to both Jack and Louise and grateful thanks to all the members and guests of Mendip Golf Club for their generosity in supporting this amazing charity.
The 2026 Mens & Ladies Club Captains, Phil Leadbeater and Alison Kay, along with Junior Captain, Libbie Dezis, held the annual ‘Captains Drive In’ on Saturday 11th April. A full field of 120 players enjoyed the event and on course activities.
On Wednesday 8th April, the juniors also played in the national ‘Unleash Your Drive’ competition. This event, run in conjunction with the Golf Foundation, aims to promote golf in schools, from improving mental wellbeing, and getting more juniors into golf.
The event saw 13 juniors play and winning with a score of 39 points was Junior Vice Captain, Oscar Alexander, on countback from Joseph Parson, also with 39 points.
The Seniors Scratch team visited Worlebury for the first round match in this year's competition. The weather was perfect with warm sunshine and a gentle breeze off the Bristol Channel. Unfortunately, the advantage of a home draw meant that Mendip lost 3 1/2 to 1 1/2. Congratulations to Darrin Vowell for his win and to Charlie Pike for his half. A special mention to Rob Edney for his first official match since becoming a Senior in February.
The Seniors held the annual ‘Seniors Captains Drive In’. With a full field of 124 players playing a Texas scramble, the winning team of Simon Brand, Richard Bull, Nick Parfitt & Gary Quin with a fine score of 54! New Seniors Captain Paul Godwin is raising money for ‘Teenage Cancer Trust’ this year with a variety of fund raising ideas, including the return of the ‘Bonus Ball’ and a unique ‘Golf Ball Donation’ idea.
The ladies played the Coronation Foursomes in wet and windy conditions, with the winning pair of Dee Garnsworthy and Karen Cookson scoring a fine 36 points, beating Jenny Merrett and Edwina Willis who had 35 points. Dee and Karen now go forward to the Area Finals at Yeovil Golf Club on 14th July.
Tildee Rocker-Cook, a 12 year old junior girl member, played in the 'Robert Rock Junior Tour' at The Caversham Golf Club in Surrey.
Tildee won just her second event on the Tour by 3 shots, shooting a gross 88, nett 64.
Junior member, Maisie Dezis finished a magnificent 4th place overall and won the girls section at the Weston-Super-Mare Junior Open.
Her sister, Libbie Dezis, the Mendip Club’s current Junior Captain, finished a brilliant 4th in the Frilford Heath Ladies Scratch Salver over 36 holes.
