The annual Captain’s Charity event (which, since its inception in 1999, has raised well over £200,000 for many good causes) takes place on Saturday, 28th July with a shotgun start at 12.30 p.m.

This is an excellent way for visitors to Mendip to enjoy a round of golf, followed by a buffet meal; the chance to win good prizes and to add support to the fundraising on behalf of the Captains’ Charities, St Margaret’s Hospice Care and The Teenage Cancer Trust.

To enter a team of four, you can either download an entry form from the Mendip website and submit it to the Secretary at Mendip, or contact either the Secretary’s Office or Pro Shop to obtain further details: 01749 840570.

The Men’s Bowmaker Medal saw an entry of 27 teams who played in wonderful weather on a fast running course, with the greens now at their best.

As a result, scoring was low. In third place were long-standing members, Brian Francis, Eric Jordan and John Hargraves, who have always excelled in this type of event, with a nine-under-par 133.

In second place, another specialist Bowmaker Team in the form of John Whyman, Keith Beasley and Alan Evans-Jones with 132, but the winners – and this year’s holders of the trophy, are Glynn Haddock, Jonathan Cummings and Phil Butcher with 131.

The Men’s Avalon B side with a much-changed team unfortunately came up against a strong Isle of Wedmore outfit and came away pointless. No doubt this will prove to be a temporary hiccup.

The Ladies’ Courage Trophy Competition, a foursomes event, saw some fine scoring by the winners, who were Chris Down and Jean Padfield with 41 points, one better than runners-up, Kay O’Connor and Chris Olds with forty. Eileen Masters and Wendy Norman were third.

The Ladies’ weekend

stableford was won by Nichola Croft, with an excellent 41 points, which will result in a substantial handicap reduction! Dee Garnsworthy was second and Sarah James third.

The Ladies’ Invitation Day saw a good entry and some very high temperatures.

Winning with 55 points were Fran Davies and her guest, Jenny Ahlberg from Farrington, with 55 points.

One of the highlights of the day was a hole-in-one on the 17th by Mendip member, Sue Needham.

Sue is relatively new to golf. She hit a fine shot which pitched between the bunkers, rolled up to the pin, nestled against the pin and a couple of minutes later, disappeared.

After much celebration, Sue was asked which club she had used. Six iron was the response. She then looked at the club which she was still holding, to find that she had taken out and hit a five iron in error! Moral of this story, bearing in mind that most of our shots are left short of green, “think six, take five!”

The Ladies’ Alliance B team went down in a hard-fought battle with Clevedon, 2½–4½, with wins from Jo Espley, back after a long absence following knee surgery, and Nichola Croft, with Chris Williams gaining a half.

The Seniors held their annual Invitation Day, where forty pairs competed. The outstanding conditions led to some very high scoring, with over half the field recording scores of forty or better. In third place, after a four-way countback on 44 points were Jim Mallon and his guest, R. Jenkins.

In Second place with 46 points were John Stembridge and T. Mallon, but winning with an eleven-better-than-par score of 47 points were Andy Parfitt and M. Wise.

A raffle held on the day produced a donation to the Seniors’ Captain’s Charity, The Motor Neurone Disease Association of £309.

The latest Seniors’ Match saw a visit to Bath and, amazingly, Mendip came away with an 8–0 win. Mendip’s winning pairs were John Whyman/Keith Gadsden, Jim Mallon/Alan Edwards, Bryan Lewis/Nigel Cheshire, Andy Frampton/Mike Lill, John Stembridge/Martin Wilkins, Colin Davies/Bryon Osborn, Jim Scott/David Garnsworthy and Martin Osborne/Dick Ransley.

The Pro Shop are now running a weekly Longest Drive Competition on the Simulator in addition to the Nearest the Pin event.

Winners of the longest drive were Ellen Reakes and Tom Lowe. Nearest the Pin winners were Ellen Reakes, John Ellis and J Gardiner.
