THE annual Charity Day has been held at Mendip Golf Club. With 130 players supporting the event in aid of Gympanzees, everyone enjoyed the course, food, atmosphere and all the fund-raising events on the day.
The winners were Susan Forshaw, David Forshaw, Mike Woodward & Min Woodward with a team score of 108 points. Runners-up were Glyn Bryant, Liam Rotheram, Ashley Clark and Andy Bryant with 107 points. The best mixed / ladies team was won by Carol Howerd, Aimee Sawyer, Harper Howerd and Lauren Morris.
The event raised over £7,300 for Gympanzees and all this could not have been possible without the amazing support of all members, guests and volunteers who helped to make the day a huge success.
Meanwhile, The Seniors held the Bill Freeman trophy on a very hot day. The winner with a fine score of 42 points was Nigel Jarvis. Division 1 went to Steven Heal with 40 points. Division 2 went to Tony Scott with 40 points and Division 3 was won by Martin Roper, also with 40 points.
The Ladies played the second round of the John Wain Trophy and the Duchess Cup in breezy conditions, a far cry from the sweltering heat of the previous week! The winner of the second round of the John Wain Trophy was Julia Phillips with 39 points, closely followed by Caroline Simper on 38 points. Leading the way in the standings after 2 rounds is Hayley Bullock, followed by Julia Phillips.
Leading the way in the Duchess Cup round 2 was Elaine M Richardson with a brilliant 23 points over 9 holes. Runner-up was Eileen Masters with 20 points. Leading the standings after 2 rounds is Elaine M Richardson.
Mendip Ladies played an ICL match away to Taunton and Pickeridge. Unfortunately, they came away with a 7-0 defeat, the first loss of the season.
The 2nd mixed friendly match of the season was played at home to Wells. The result was 4.5 - 2.5 win against Mendip’s close neighbours.
The Avalon A team played their home local derby against Wells A who are top of the league and lost 3-2.. As is the trend this season three games went to the 18th but Mendip couldn't win any of them.
The Alliance A team had another tough day away to Saltford. The weather, at last, was much more favourable and Saltford were very good hosts. Unfortunately Mendip only managed one win and one halved match and went down 11-3.
On a cooler than recent day the Seniors Captain Paul Godwin, on his first visit to Bridport, saw his team record a very credible 3 -3 draw against an experienced home team. It was wonderful to enjoy such a well maintained course on the beautiful Jurassic Coast.
Following a very creditable away draw at Bridport earlier in the week, The Mendip Seniors returned to home turf to take on their fellow '1908 club' Tidworth Garrison in the first leg of the annual Tidworth Cup fixture.
On an afternoon perfect for golf, "Godwin's Green and White Warriors" put on a fantastic performance and secured a magnificent 6.5-0.5 victory, with all team members contributing. Barring a calamitous capitulation in the return fixture in a couple of weeks’ time, during this World Cup period, this could well be one cup "that is coming home!".
