THERE was an excellent win for the Camerton and Peasedown High Handicap Golf Croquet team against Cardiff CC in June. Team captain Peter Buchanan and four other CPCC players, together with referee Brian Wilson, welcomed a strong Cardiff team of six players to their lawns in Peasedown St John.
Despite a less than encouraging forecast the weather was benign and the full match of twenty games, the usual schedule of singles and doubles play, was completed without interruption. After the first four rounds, the scores were level at 8 games all; Camerton and Peasedown won the four remaining singles to run out winners by 12 games to 8.
Every CPCC player contributed wins to the scoresheet, with Peter Buchanan winning all 5 of his games. For Cardiff, David Palser and Peter Jones eachenjoyed 3 wins.
Marion Button’s Handicap ‘A’ Golf Croquet team scored well in their return match against Bradford-on-Avon in early July. It had been a loss for CPCC when they played away, at Bradford-on-Avon, so there was a lot at stake in the return match on the home lawns.
Bradford-on-Avon fielded a strong team but even so CPCC made an excellent start in the doubles and the first singles. With Ann Munton (H6) beating Paul Francis (H1) they quickly went into an early lead but by lunch Bradford-on-Avon had clawed a couple of games back.
The afternoon games, played in the hottest part of the day, were hard fought and equally scored. However by tea the match was already in CPCC’s favour and at the end of the day they ran out the winners by 13 games to 7. Special mention went to Simon Munton who won 4 out of his 5 games.
The referee for the day was newly qualified David Richards who used all his skills as a former Welsh International player to assist at some tricky moments during play.
