The 119 Competitors in the annual running of the Jubilee Cup were faced with some demanding conditions, severe heat, fiery conditions and fast running greens saw CSS rise to 74. Division 1 was won by Trevor Foster, with net 70, beating Mike Vincent after countback, with Paul Reakes third, with 71. Division 2 was also decided on countback, with Wayne Spencer beating Tony Taylor, both on net 68, with Roger Willis third with 70. Division 3 went to Martyn Russell, with 69, beating Tom Scott with 70, who in turn beat Mike Snaith after countback.

However, the Cup Winner, who came from Division 2, was Terry Scriven with a fine 7 under CSS score of 67.

The Men’s Avalon A Team recorded a fine 5-0 wine over visiting Brean. Tom Rawlings and John Ellis playing in their first match for the A Team had an excellent 7/6 victory. The Avalon C Team visited Minehead and suffered a 0–5 defeat. They then entertained the same opponents and this time the score was closer, but they still went down 1½–3½. Points for Mendip came from Team Captain Malcolm Srawley and H. Phillips, with a half gained from D. Lewer and Philip Moores. Matters improved when visiting Weston where a good 3–2 victory was recorded. Malcolm Srawley and Alister Easton, Tom Lowe and Chris Butland and H. Phillips and P. Kivi were Mendip winners.

The Ladies’ EGU Medal, where the Ladies were also playing for the Centenary Plate, saw two outstanding performances. Despite very hot weather and difficult conditions, Aimee Sawyer carded an outstanding net 74, 4 under the amended CSS of 78. In so doing, her handicap reduced to 3.1. Not only did she win Division 1, but also the Trophy. Second place in the division saw a three-way tie, nine shots back on net 83 and after countback, Elaine Kitchenham was second, Lynn Cox third and Jo Espley fourth. Division 2 saw another fine round, this time from Andrea Williams, who carded a 76 again, nine shots clear of Libby Bellew on 85, who beat Mary Ware on countback. Division 3 was won by Eileen Masters with 83 after countback from Elaine Richardson.

The Seniors’ Ollie Parfitt Cup, the only Seniors’ Medal Competition, attracted a large entry. After a close run battle, Nigel Hill emerged as the winner with a net 68, with Gareth Collier second on 69, Chairman of Comps and Handicaps, John Brooksbank was third with 71 with Alan Edwards and Kelvin Lun on the same score. You had to feel for John, who drove into the left hand front bunker on the 18th and after a little difficulty walked off with an 8! The Veterans’ Competition was won on 72 by Derek Strudwick, with Danny Nixon in 2nd on the same score and Doug Thompson 3rd with 75.

The Seniors played Enmore at Mendip and recorded a 6­–2 victory. Mendip winners were Brian Say and Jim Mallon, Geoff Mosley and Steve Creese, Chris Alexander and Mike Snaith, Tony Taylor and Bob Smallcombe and Jim Scott and Alan Evans-Jones with Rob Stanton and Alan Edwards and Keith Gadsden and Nigel Hill gaining halves.

The Mendip Mixed Team also played Enmore and after a very close fight emerged winners by 4½–3½
