The Cyder Cup is a Trophy presented to Mendip by Director of Golf, Stuart Disney. This year it was played for by four teams of six, each representing a section of the club. It was a Stableford event with all scores counting.
A very closely fought battle resulted in a win for the Juniors by just two points from the Men with the Seniors third by another two points and the Ladies fourth.
Mendip held another very successful Open Bowmaker which attracted a full house entry of 93 players, the majority of which were visitors. The winning visitors team with 78 points came from Yeovil with a team from Borington second with 77 and a team from Stockwood Vale/Burnham/Bath third with 73. The winning member/visitor team was Brian Say/Kevin Mattock and a Newbury & Crookham member with 77, Kevin Keene playing with members from West Wilts was second with 76 and Tony Williams/Adrian Brooking-Clark playing with a Henbury member were third, with 74. The winning Mendip team with a best score of the day of 79 were Nigel Jarvis/Kelvin Lum/Derek Strudwick.
The Men’s Texas Scramble saw 90 competing and an incredibly tight finish. A triple countback on net 58 saw a win for Chad Patel/Robert Ware/Andrew Wells with Geoff Collard/Nick Cox/Stefan Golledge second and Phil Butcher/Glynn Haddock/Paul Jamieson were third.
Phil’s team must be kicking themselves for dropping a shot on the 18th and a special mention to the low handicap team of Geoff Collard who had six birdies and an eagle in their round. There were then six teams on 59, the best being Duncan Offer/Andy Parfitt/Paul Smith.
The Ladies’ Arizona Shuffle saw forty ladies competing. Elaine P. Richardson/Andrea Williams/Lilian Reed/Louise Scott were third with 69, Dee Garnsworthy/Lynn Cox/Hilary Rowdon/Jinhee Page were second with 71 but the clear winners were the low handicap team of Jenny Merrett/Edwina Willis/Lyn Vowles who were supported by young Ffion Richardson, who had a fine 78 points.
The Alliance B Team completed their fixtures in what has, for various reasons, been a very challenging year. Their last match was away to Saltford where they gained a fighting halved match with wins for Anita Butcher and Lulu Carolan and a half gained by Elaine P. Richardson.
99 Seniors played in the last of the OOM competitions for the season and were faced with their first taste of real autumnal weather, temperatures in single figures and a swirling wind.
A few coped better than the majority. Division One went to Simon Brand with 38 points, with Antony Scott second with 36 after countback from Kenneth Webster. Divison Two saw an excellent 42 points from Justin May, with Daryll Livingston second with 40 and Ian Tinsley third, with 38. The Veterans’ Division was won by John Sewart with 33 points after countback from Alan Evans Jones and Selwyn Rees. The Seniors now move into the winter month with a full schedule of ‘fun’ events planned.
The Seniors entertained Yeovil and in the main, managed to dodge the heavy showers. The visitors were victorious 4–2 with the home points being secured by Steve Davis/Norman Squire and Alan Snow/Martin Sutherland.
Nearest the Pin this week again went to John Ellis with Simon Grant second and Tom Small third.
