MENDIP Golf Club’s Avalon C team registered a 3-2 success over Fosseway with wins for Malcolm Srawley/Craig Robertson, Chris Butland/Tony Logan and Gary Quin/Rob Richardson.
The B team were not so fortunate, going down to a defeat against Worlebury with their solitary success coming form joint captains Tom Young and Mark Smith.
The Ladies yellow ball Bowmaker saw Anita Butcher/Elaine Kitchenham/Carol Curtis/Fran Davies in 3rd place with 107. In 2nd place were Chris Williams/Nola Russell/Carol Howerd/Jenny Merrett with 110 but clear winners with 118 were Carol King/Lizzie Wood/Lally Gibson/Fiona Hassard.
The Granny Trophy and Weekend Stableford event saw a win for Lally Gibson with a fine 42 points. Div 1 went to Edwina Willis with 41 with Rosemary Brown 2nd with 37. Div 2 was won by Helen Roberts, also with 41, with Anne Collins 2nd with 39.
The Ladies Friendly team enjoyed a halved match at home to Worlebury, wins coming from Louise Scott/Rebecca Edwards and Anne Collins/Bridget Rylance.
The Seniors finally managed to break their losing run with a 4½-1½ win over Kingsdown. Successes came from Richard White/Colin Davies, Team Captain Paul Godwin/Andy Griffiths, Paul Wood/John Scott and Phil Brocks/Norman Squire with Darrin Vowles/Steve Regler gaining a half. However, they were not so fortunate when playing Worlebury, going down to a 2-4 defeat. Wins came from Paul Wood/Martyn Russell and Tony Scott/Paul Godwin.
Seventeen juniors played in the Junior Captain’s Drive In event, the new junior captain being Ben Roberts. The Juniors were blessed with a glorious sunny day and this made a great occasion for them. In the 9 hole event Ben came out on top with 19 points, Harry Bassett was 2nd with 18 after count back from Cameron Colbourne with Grant Jeffrey 4th with 17 after count back from Ollie Roach.
Mendip's Spring Open Bowmaker had a full field who saw the course at its very best. The winning visitor team came from Cumberwell Park/Stockwood Vale with 84 points. 2nd were a team from Orchardleigh with 81 and 3rd a team from Came Down with 78. The winning members team were Simon Kidd/Martin Roper/Andy Price with 83 with Paul Panton/Peter Walford/Steve Ball 2nd with 82.
In the last of our ‘who are they’ we feature the Seniors Captain Elect, Paul Godwin. Paul joined Mendip in 1999. While working his golf was rather limited to a round a week often with his son James. Retirement has led to a much more active involvement and with wife Debbie taking up the game 3 years ago.
Mendip has become a very important part of the Godwin life. Paul’s main claim to golfing success is that he has been the holder of the Duffers Cup (a KO for higher handicap players) on three separate occasions. Since retirement Paul has been a regular member of the seniors teams, both friendly and Avalon League. He together with seniors captain Paul Wood make a great leadership team for the section
Meanwhile, the 2024 Mendip’s Lady Captain Ann Padley has presented a cheque for £4,000 raised during her Captaincy year to her chosen charity Childrens Hospice South West. This is a wonderful achievement.
