With the Turkey Trot season at Mendip in full swing, continuing fine weather and good playing conditions have ensured full entry sheets.
The Bowmaker Medal event saw the Team of S. Coate, T. Scriven and R. Gumbleton in third place, with a net 131, in second place, the well established and very competitive team of R. Ashman, P. Davies and P. Jones, carded 128, but that was not good enough to trouble the runaway winners of J. Cross, P. Butcher and G. Haddock, who scored an excellent net 123.
A second Texas Scramble event saw A. Evans-Jones, T. Lowe and C. Bennett come in with net 59.4, just losing out to J. Tweed, I. Stolworthy and J. Brooksbank with 59.2, but they in turn were just beaten by P. Gainey, K. Salt and C. Charles, who scored 58.8.
The Ladies have had a fine year under the Captaincy of C. Down, with the Alliance B and Inter Club league teams both achieving promotion. The Annual Craft Fair and associated Open Competition was well attended, with a full entry list. Overall winners were M. Speed, K. Cookson and an Enmore lady, who scored 81 points. Best Mendip Team were P. Rawlins and V. Hayes, playing with an Isle of Wedmore player, with 75 points and the winning visitors’ team came from Mendip Spring.
The Ladies version of the Men’s Turkey Trot competition was won by S. Roper and J. Millington, with forty points, closely followed by M. Ware and L. Brobson, with 39 points and W. Norman and J. Clark, with 38 points.
The final Seniors event of the season, the Bill Freeman Cup Competition, saw a large entry of 74 competitors. Playing conditions were amazing, bearing in mind the time of the year, and this resulted in some very good scoring. S. Lake gained fourth position, with 36 points on countback from four others, with P. French in third position, with 37 points. Runner-up was near veteran, D. Nixon, with a fine 39 points, but no-one could get close to the cup winner, who was Club Captain, M. Wilkins, with an outstanding 42 points. This achievement gained the Captain a handicap reduction to 12.7 and about time too, many will say!
As this was the last event in the Seniors’ Order of Merit, the final positions were J. Treeby in fourth place, with ninety points, B. Smith, third, with 96, C. Bryant, second, with 98 points, but with 101 points, the winner was J. Cross.
With an influx of new members recently welcomed from the now closed Frome Golf Club, Seniors Captain, Geoff Mosley, arranged a small Seniors Competition to help with the new members’ integration into Mendip. Twelve new members played, each partnering an existing member, with Andy’s pasties awaiting their return to the clubhouse. Thoroughly enjoyed by all the winners, off full handicap were new members, F. Watts, playing with P. Bendall, who scored 46 points, closely pursued by P. Moores and J. Brooksbank. Also with good scores were N. Jarvis and Brian Roberts-Wray and Rod Dyson and John Whyman.
