The finals of the Summer Knock-Outs have taken place, with the following results: Maureen Tayler has won the Warren Trophy beating Corrina Bates in the final. Maureen has come on leaps and bounds with her game, having gone through the Coppers ‘training’ and is now part of the new Committee.
The formidable pairing of Maureen Charlton and Pauline Young have won the Esme Trophy having beaten the equally formidable pair, Lesley Moore and Kathy Shiells.
Sue Stilwell has won the Miller Matchplay Trophy, beating June Symonds on the second outing. The first time they tried to play the final, they were caught in a monster rainstorm which almost immediately flooded the greens – pictures were taken to prove the impossibility of play!
Another Coppers ‘graduate’, Fiona Hazzard, has won the Hobbs Matchplay Trophy and is now the new Secretary of the Ladies section. Well done to them all and we look forward to the outgoing Ladies Captain, Min Woodward’s, presentation evening on 9th December after the Christmas meal.
The new Ladies Captain, Bobby Appleby, who was also Ladies Captain in 1999/2000, had her drive-in on Thursday, 15th October. The format was a Three Ball Bowmaker, High-Medium-Low, with two best scores to count. 43 ladies played with several of the low handicappers being ghost cards for some of the teams. On the fourteenth hole, the ladies had to put their numbered white stick anywhere on the hole where they thought Bobby’s drive would finish. After all the teams were in, the ladies followed Bobby and her new furry friend, rescue dog, Poppy, down to the fourteenth for her drive. Banter ensued, but Bobby concentrated hard and did the best drive of the day, the ball flying down the left edge of the fairway to finish about eighty-yards from the green! Much clapping and laughter ensued. Mary Hobbs was the winner, having placed her stick parallel with Bobby’s ball. She received a box of chocolates from the Captain. Bobby then announced the winners of the team event: Fourth was Jill Eade, Sharman Bradshaw and Gail Proctor on countback, with 78 points. Third was Maureen Tayler, Clare Salter and Cynthia Miller also 78 points. Second, with 79 points on countback, was Jackie Hobbs, Angela Hudd and Jackie Walker. The winners, also with 79 points on countback, were Tracey Watts, Carol Jones and Pauline Young. Pauline thanked everyone for a great day and her playing partners.
