The Mendip Captains’ Trophy, a Four Ball Better Ball event, took place in some truly dreadful weather, making good scoring difficult.
However, the pairing of Alan O’Leary and David Cox held their games together to win the event with 41 points. Alan Edwards and Wayne Black were second with 39.
Paul Reakes and Ryan Sainsbury secured third place, with 38 on countback from father-and-son pairing, Tony and James Taylor.
The Ladies held their annual Open Bowmaker, combined with the Craft Fair event, which attracted 25 teams – seventeen of which were visitors from eleven different clubs. The day raised an excellent £700 for the Ladies’ Captain’s Charity. The winning visitor teams came from Worlebury, Mendip Spring and another Worlebury team, with 81, 78 and 77.
The visitors outscored the home players, with Julia Phillips/Sandie Roper/Pauline Williams being the best Mendip Team with 77, and in second place came Chris Atkinson/Hilary Rowdon/Jinhee Page with 74.
Another trophy won this week was the Endeavour Salver, and this went to Liz Rose.
Mendip Seniors played their final two matches of the season. Firstly, at Mendip, they defeated West Wilts, 4½–1½, with wins for John Brooksbank/Nick
Inskip, Brian Say/Kee Low, Selwyn Rees/Martin
Osborne and Jim Mallon/Philip Moores, with Seniors’ Captain, Andy Frampton/Darryl Livingstone gaining a half.
When Clevedon visited Mendip in the final match of the season, a most enjoyable contest took place and finished with honours-even, 3½–3½. Winning for Mendip were Peter Rumming/John Brooksbank, Martin Osborne/Stephen Smith and Norman Squire/Kevin Carmody, with Seniors’ Captain-Elect, Bryan Lewis, partnered by Simon Atkinson, gaining a half.
In total, the Seniors won twenty, lost sixteen and five matches were halved. 77 different Seniors represented Mendip, with Seniors’ Captain, Andy Frampton, playing in all the fixtures bar one – an exhausting schedule.
The Mixed Team played their last match when Long Ashton were the visitors. The result went against Mendip, 2–4, with wins coming from Hilary and Hugh Rowdon and Club Chairman, Mary Ware, playing with Simon Atkinson.
The final Nearest the Pin challenge saw wins for Marian Speed, David Williams and Henry Banks. This has now been replaced with the Pro Shop Bull’s Eye Challenge.
The first of these saw wins for Tony Taylor (23), Alan Roper (21) and Lyn Cox (21). These scores were out of a maximum achievable of 25, so I suspect
future weeks’ challenges may be a little harder!
