The Ladies’ Section at Orchardleigh Golf Club played their last competition of the season on Thursday, 26th October. It was a fun event known as ‘Last of the Summer Whine’ which helps raise money for the lady captain’s charity. The ladies could make a contribution to the funds entitling them to have a good whine during their round of golf!

Although it was a beautiful sunny morning, because of recent torrential downpours and the course being rather soggy in places, it was declared by the club to be carry only. So a nine hole Texas Scramble in teams of three was the order of the day.

There were six teams who took part and more ladies who didn’t play in the competition joined them in the clubhouse afterwards for a slice of cake and a drink. During the socialising the winners were announced and with a nett score of 26 Pat Pitt, Pat Jones and Sue Sweet came in with the best round, each winning a flower arrangement created skillfully by Jan Light. One shot behind them as runners-up were Helen Marshall, Carol Weightman and Rachel Priddle who won small bottles of prosecco.

The last Bristol & District Alliance league match of the season was played by the Orchardleigh Ladies in Weston-super-Mare on 3rd October. They needed a good win to have enough points to finish in second place in their division and be promoted, but sadly they lost 6/8 so ended in third position just three points short of a promotion. It was recently announced that Ann James won the Bath Salver as the team player in the fifth division, winning the most matches and hence gained the most points during the season. She won eight of her nine matches played. Well done Ann, a fine achievement.
