Mendip’s week of Open Golf events provided an extremely busy week for all the staff at Mendip.
The Greens staff prepared a course to be proud of, with the greens running fast and true, and they received many plaudits for their efforts during the week. Almost 800 rounds of golf were played and, as if the difficulty of the course was not enough, the many visitors had to contend with a strong wind blowing throughout the week. Many members volunteered their services, and this led to a full complement of Receptionists, Starters and Board Markers being available to help the week run smoothly for all the competitors. For the record, the main prize winners were as follows:
Mixed: first Mendip, Ian Perkins, Roger Willis, Jo Espley and Edwina Willis, first visitors, R. and C. Wakefield, B. Luscombe and D. Stone (Bath).

And now for other news. The Mid-week Tankard brought another win for in-form Sam Reilly, who won Division 1 with an excellent 39 points and saw his handicap reduce to a best-ever 4.2. Second was Ryan Sainsbury, with 35 and third was Henry Treasure, with 34. Division 2 saw a win for Wayne Spencer, with 35, beating Martin Honeybun on countback, with Michael Treasure third with 34. Division 3 saw a triple tie on 34 points and after countback, victory went to Andrew Wells, second was Andy Parfitt and third, Alan Fussell.
In the Ladies’ Daily Mail Foursomes, there was a very close battle, with the winners eventually declared as Nola Russell and Libby Bellew, with 78.5, just beating the low handicap pairing of Marian Speed and Gill Brown on 79, with Lulu Carolan and Anne Hopkins third on 81.
The Ladies’ Alliance A Team had an excellent away win at Farrington, 8-6, with wins for Aimee Sawyer, Gill Brown, Patricia Rawlins and Linda Brobson. This was followed up by a Home win against Thornbury, 10-4, with further wins for Aimee, Gill and Patricia and also for Team Captain, Marian Speed and Lynn Cox.
The Seniors lost a close Somerset Rose Bowl match against Clevedon, played at Stockwood Vale. The final score of 2–3 saw wins for John Stembridge and Tony Taylor and Peter Davies and Phil Bendall, who won their match at the fourth extra hole! The Seniors’ Team visited Worlebury, but came second best when going down 2-4. The winning pair for Mendip were John Whyman and James Roebuck, with Nick Inskip and Geoff Moseley and Brian Say and Chris Alexander contributing halves. Unfortunately, after the match, Seniors’ Captain Henry Banks was taken ill and to hospital. We understand that he is making good progress and we wish him well.
