Wearing golf shorts in the middle of October is not normally an option – unless of course you are a postman! However, those who chose to do so thankfully made the right decision, as by mid-morning, the temperatures were in the twenties.

This fine weather ensured some good scoring in this, the last Qualifying Medal of the golfing year for the Seniors’ Section. Results as follows – Division One: Fred Grist (68), Alan Taylor (70), Bill Sims (71). Division Two: Richard Dancey (69), Chris Standen (70), Stephen Banfield (73). Division Three: Alan Smith (72), Geoff Skyrme (75), Richard Collier (75).

Friendly Match – the Seniors won Away to West Wilts, 5–1; won at Home to Cumberwell, 6–0; and won Away to Isle of Wedmore, 4–3. A successful season concludes with the final match at home to Knowle.

Men

A good field played at Farrington Park in the Full Members Trophy, with the autumn leaves dropping on the course. Head greenkeeper, Andy Grabham – with his knowledge of the course – had a great day, with a round 71–65 to win the trophy, with Ben Park taking second with 82–67 and Dave Teal, third, with 83–70.

Ladies

The Members’ Trophy was played on Sunday, 7th October. This is a club-run medal competition; both the Men’s and Ladies’ competitions running conjunctionally on the same day. The fine autumn weather was perfect for a Medal competition, and the best turnout of lady players for several years vied for the Trophy.

A birdie at the par-four 4th hole, and six pars in her round of gross 85, net-72, ensured Lena Warren was the champion, earning herself a handicap cut. Second place with a gross 89, net-74 was Gail Proctor. Lin Papadopoullos was third; Clare Salter had the only two-spot birdie of the day at the par-three, fifth hole.

Lena’s good form continued on Thursday, 11th October, when a large field of 42 Ladies met to play the AGM Salver, a qualifying Stableford competition. This was the last competition of Captain, Rosi Brown’s year, and she produced the Shot of the Day on the par-four, twelfth hole.

Rosi’s first tee shot had been wayward, so she had to play ‘three off the tee’. Her fourth shot was at least ninety yards to the green, but her ball found the putting surface and rolled straight into the hole for a most unlikely, but very

welcome, par-four!

Five players had two-spot birdies: Jill Eade (5th), Wendy Butt, Mandy Hobbs, Lena Warren (8th) and Min Woodward (15th).

New Lady member, Evie Thatcher, had a good round, scoring 36 points to take third place; one behind Lena, who shot a gross-85 again to score 37 points.

Round of the Day came from Linda Rogers, whose fine score of forty points earned her a two-shot handicap reduction and her name on the AGM Salver as the winner. Rosi presented the AGM Salver to Linda later that evening at the Ladies’ AGM.
