Last week saw the UK baking in record temperatures of 30c, the weather on Thursday was no exception: strong sunshine, a slight breeze, and an air temperature which climbed higher throughout the day. The weather was scorching and so was the scoring, in the Farrington Park ladies monthly medal.
A few players had to be withdrawn from the due to the extreme heat, but a field of twenty-six still contested. The links like fast fairways gave up yardage to the players, and the faster greens called for precision putting.
Five players in division one played under the nett par of 73. Five pars, and a birdie at the par 4 14th, gave top spot to Lally Gibson, with a nett 68. Jenny Howarth scored nett 69, to take the honours in Division 3 with Laura Fox (nett 71), and Sue Barnes (nett 74) finishing second and third, respectively.
However, the lowest scores of the day, were reserved for the players in Division two. Six of them shot better than nett 72. Heather Woodland scored nett 68, and finished in third place on countback ahead of the ever-consistent Min Woodward and Lo Dallocco, who has been recording some good scores in the last few weeks.
Jill Holland scored nett 67 for second place, and was the leader in the clubhouse until the final group finished. Playing in that group was the eventual winner, with a round which included six pars and a two-spot birdie at the par 3 5th. A fortnight ago, Sue Forshaw had a golf lesson with Farrington’s head professional Nick Brennan. He altered her grip slightly but also identified that the shafts on Sue’s clubs were too long for her height, and she had them cut down accordingly. The result was that Sue shot an incredible score of nett 61, to take first place in Division two, beat the whole field by six shots, and reduced her handicap by four.
