Alan and Sam Todd (Wells) beat 63 other pairs from around the West Country to win the annual 36 hole Cyder Cup at Wells and Farrington Park Golf Clubs. On the first day of the Four Ball Better Pairs Competition at Wells, Erica Klim and David Szymanski (Wells), Alan and Sam Todd and Wayne Lock and Rita Terzi (Kingweston) all achieved 41 points to take the joint lead.

With conditions slightly easier on the second day at Farrington Park, the scoring improved considerably with 22 pairs shooting forty points or over.

Mendip players, Alan Fussell and Ian Fairclough came in with a best of tournament 45 points with Diane and Peter Ramsay (Wells) close by with 44 points. Overnight leaders Klim and Szymanski and Lock and Terzi fell back into the pack with scores of 39 and 38 points respectively.

But the two Todds produced a solid round of 44 points to clinch victory by one from Fussell and Fairclough.

The best visitors’ prize on 81 points went to two very familiar players, Simon and Jill Wellington. The former long-standing Farrington members and well-known Midsomer Norton business owners are now living in Devon and are members of Axe Cliff.

The Cyder Cup goes from strength to strength and is now in its sixth year. Players commented on the fantastic condition of the golf courses and how much they enjoyed the tournament. Results: Alan and Sam Todd (Wells) 85, Alan Fussell and Ian Fairclough (Mendip) 84, Peter and Diane Ramsay (Wells) 83.

The Saturday Stableford was played in changeable conditions, making scoring a little difficult, but in Division One, Steve Blackwell took control at the top with a score of 38 points, beating Shane Phelps into second place on countback with Steve Longden a close third on 37 points.

In Division Two, early starter, Roger Franklyn, arrived in the clubhouse with the best score of 38 points, followed in second by Charlie Holmes, on 35 points, beating Tony Woodland into third on countback . In Division Three, Nick Farrar was top of the charts with 36 points, followed in second by Ian Jones on 33 points and third place to Jon Cox on thirty points.

Darren Wilkins topped Division One on forty points in the Sunday Stableford, played on the better day of the weekend followed in second place by Nick Poore on 34 and Shane Phelps third on 33. In Division Two, Liam Dunne took the money with a score of 36 points followed in second by Ian Jones on 35 points and Simon Kidd in third on 33 points.

A good turnout on a beautiful summer’s day and some good scoring was achieved in the Seniors’ 4 Ball Better competition. It was thirsty work playing in high temperatures and players waited with a welcoming drink to hear the results of the day.

Returning after a break from seniors’ golf, Bob Baker and Tony Clement returned an outstanding score of 49 for victory. Neil Morgan and Roger Farr carded 48 points to take second spot on countback from Charles Romaine and Phil Toogood. Other pairs results: 47 Leo Seddon/Dave Millington, 46 Boyd Francis/Rick Clark, 45 Steve Mitchell/Keith Shepherd.
