The father and son team of Martin and ten-year-old Freddie Lovell played an excellent game to win the Captain’s Day first prize.
Erica Klim organised a smooth running day with perfect weather for the large number of competitors playing a Four Ball Better Ball format. Freddie Lovell hit a superb drive on the Par Three tenth, which rolled up to the hole and rested six inches away.
The first Men’s team were Alan Obern and John Sheppard and the first Ladies team were Sue Wells and Hazel Carmichael. The first mixed team were Anita Love and John Slater. Second overall were Colin Wilde and Ron Davey. Nearest the Pin winners were Mike Bailey, Andy Williams, Freddie Lovell and Jill Bocquet. Nearest the pin in Two Hole were Sue Wells and Phil White. Seventeen two spots were recorded for the day, giving testament to the hard work of the greenstaff.
Wells played two matches: Mendip Spring at home and Knowle. Wells got off to a good start, with Rich Connock and Jack Baillie winning 4&3. Rob Payne and Will Thompson won pretty convincingly, 7&5.
Third were Colin Mantle and Andy Roberts, who lost to Mendip Springs’ best pair 7&6. Mike Metcalfe and Baden Wilkinson fought hard to win one up and finally
Pascal Norman and Nick Wilson won 7&5.
In the Knowle match, Dave Hayward and Baden Wilkinson came back from two down to win. Will Thompson and Rob Payne romped home 7&6. Glen Crocker and Mike Metcalfe suffered a rare defeat.
Pascal Norman and Nick Wilson and Ian Burr and Simon Jackson both won one up. This means Wells have progressed from bottom of the league with four straight wins. If they win their final match, they are optimistic about promotion.
Wells’ Ladies were well represented at the County Bronze meeting held at Wedmore with Julie Blunden winning the Lovell Trophy, Mary Harrison winning Division Three, Sylvia Gibbon being runner-up in Division Two and Janice White third overall.
The Ladies played the King Castle Cup when just three clubs and a putter can be used. Playing in the rain added to the difficulty, but Tina Davies led the way, winning with 29 points.
