The prestigious Cowern Trophy was won in fine style by Hazel Carmichael and Andy Williams with nett 71.
The annual event is drawn with everyone in with a chance of glory. The wind played its part in sending balls off the fairway, but with the greens in superb condition, the short game was a joy to play. In second place was Polly Williams with Philip Slater, so some celebration in the Williams household.
Wells Seniors hosted West Wilts and had a great day. Tony Harrison and Ian Mills won their match, 2&1. Peter Leverick had an Eagle on the par 5 8th, which lead to a win 4&3, with his partner, Mike Gee. John Moxon, who stepped in at the last moment, and his partner, Glyn Hallett, won on the last hole. Nick Wilson played very well, winning 4&2 with his partner, Piers Dalby. Wells won convincingly, 6–0.
Worlebury Seniors visited Wells. After the halved match at Worlebury earlier in the season, there was all to play for. Mike Gee and Geoff Ead came in easy winners, 4&2, as did Seniors’ Captain, Dave Hayward and Ken Ford, 4&3. Colin Mantle and George White won 3&2, helped by White getting a birdie on the first hole. Unusually, there were three matches halved. Bill O’Callaghan and David Gibbon were four down after four, but rescued the situation to lead at one point, but had to settle for a half. Wells won the match 5½ to 1½.
