Wells Seniors much enjoyed playing the lovely parkland course at Orchardleigh on a glorious spring day, with the mature trees looking their finest. But some players managed to get behind too many of them, and the home team won by five games to two.
The victorious Wells pairs, both winning by 2&1, were Alan Elkins and Andrew Boatswain, and Geoff Ead and John North, who hopes to spend more time on the golf course when his successful year as Mayor of Wells ends later this month.
Several of the other games were also closely fought. Ably partnered by Dave Hayward, who chipped in from the bunker on the 17th to level the match, Seniors’ Captain, John Moxon, managed to lose on the last putt for the second away match in succession!
In the Men’s Tweedale Medal, superb golf was played in superb conditions. In Division One, Alan Todd won with nett-64, Simon Jackson was second with nett-68, and Robert Swift was third with nett-70.
The first three Division Two players all came in with nett-69, with John Hockey winning on count-back from Stephen Clark and Tom Roberts.
In Division Three, Geoff Spinks was victorious with nett-70, followed by Rory Meek and Mike Cundill both on nett-71.
The Ladies’ Medal and Queen Mary Trophy saw Silvia Gibbon win with an excellent round of nett-73, followed by Sue Slade and Janice White, both on nett-76. Monies raised from this competition go to the Marie Curie Foundation.
The Men also enjoyed keen competition on their Medal day, with Mike Metcalfe taking the honours with nett-72 on count-back from Kevin Parsons in the First Division. In Division Two, both Peter Bartholomew and Julian Thompson came in with nett-75.
