A very successful Charity Day was held, with over thirty teams taking part helping to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Society.
With beautiful weather and the course in excellent condition, good scores were recorded.
There were some high scores, with the winners having 96 points. The winners after countback were Clive Keene, Robert Chalker, Paul Cox and Geoff Knight, who were in fact the first team out. Second was Club Captain, Andrew Boatswain, with Steve Rouse, James Church and Oli Smart.
The Ladies’ prize was won by Erica Klim, Cath Level, Hazel Carmichael and Katrina Foote. Nearest the Pin in two on the 15th hole was Phil White.
A large number of Seniors played in the Dave Parsons trophy, an elegant statue of a golfer given to the club by his wife. It was a lovely day, although rather breezy.
The winner was Barry Williams, with a fine score of 40 points, followed closely by John Blench, Richard Sheard and Lawrence Sokol, all with 39 points. Roger Webber and Martin Barnes both won two sleeves of balls each for scoring a 2 on two par-three holes.
The Stragglers played the home leg of the fixture with Mendip Spring. Always a popular fixture, the weather was fine without being too hot, the company friendly as always, and the golf competitive but in the right way.
First out were the super fit pairing of Steve Heath and Ivor McKeown. A good tight game ensued, Wells winning 2-up. Second out were Richard Mansfield and late replacement, Paul Cullen. This LH and RH combination confused the opposition and soon built an early lead which they held to good effect, winning 3&2.
George Barrow-Stacey and Richard Williams persevered and fought hard but lost 4&3. John Baker and new recruit, Mike Vincent, were next. Some super golf was played by these master tacticians, who won 4&3. Finally, Terry Searle and Ben Jones ran out winners 2-up.
Overall, we won the first leg of this fixture 4&1, with the keenly anticipated second leg away in two weeks’ time.
The Ladies played in sunny conditions with tricky pin positions for the President’s Cup. The winner, with an outstanding nett-71, was Sue Slade. Silver nett winner was Cath Levell and the Bronze nett winner was Rose Hallett.
