The Senior Captain’s Day Bowmaker did not see the best weather, but it still allowed teams to put in some very good scores.
Mike Metcalfe, Terry Searle and Roy Elliot were first, with Peter Leverick, Alan Locke and John Moxon second and Dean Hamilton, Lawrence Sokol and Len Sweales third. Nearest the Pin (10th hole) was Colin Webber, and the two-spots were Glen Crocker and Nick Carter.
The annual match between the Past Club Captains and the Past Ladies’ Captains was held on the eve of the Open Championships. The Trophy, a replica of the claret jug, was donated to the Club by Alan and Audrey Shore, and has been played for since the early 2000s. The result of this year’s match was a win for the Ladies, retaining the trophy, with an aggregate of 340 stableford points, eighteen ahead of the Men.
Another great turnout in the Tweedale Cheddar Trophy. When the wind blows and the tees go back, the scoring drops, but there were some exceptions. Many congratulations to the Cheddar Trophy winner, John Beasley, with a quite amazing 47 points, now not playing off sixteen any more!
The Stragglers travelled to Mendip Spring for the return match. First out were Richard Williams and John Baker, who narrowly lost 4&2. Second were George Barrow and Steve Heath, who enjoyed a very tight game eventually securing a well-deserved half.
Third were Stuart Gowen and Sam, who also recorded a half. Fourth were the ever-reliable Steve Barrow and Terry Searle, who sadly weren’t quite as reliable on this occasion, in losing 3&2.
Last, but not least, were our only winning team of Mike Vincent and Adam Holliday. So, on the day, we came a close second 2&3, but added to our home leg, we were overall winners 6&4.
The Captain’s Roll-up was a keen competition enjoyed by all, with Andrew Boatswain coming first with 38 points. Mike Gee was the worthy runner-up with 37 points. The next Sunday roll-up is 25th August.
