A very successful day was enjoyed by over a hundred golfers, as Wells held their Annual Charity Day to support Heads Up at South Horrington.
The Chip Putties team of Jill and Steve Bocquet, with Lorraine and John Collings, were the winners of the overall first prize. Second prize went to the Rag Bag Helpers, Colin Payne, Jim Saint, Vic Burgoyne and Ron Gay. The team from Premier Forest, Simon Harris, Nigel Williams, Duncan Smith and Steve Fraser won the non-handicappers first prize. Congratulations to Geoff Dyer, who won the nearest the pin prize on the seventeenth by having a hole in one. A successful day raising thousands for Heads Up.
Wells played at Henbury in the Bristol and District League in windy conditions with occasional summery rain showers. The course, which is very similar to Wells in length and narrowness with lots of trees, was in excellent condition.
Richard Connock and Pete Stock kicked off with a narrow one up win. The result was repeated by birthday boy, Baden Wilkinson and partner, Charlie Lewis. Sam Todd and Rob Payne staged a magnificent fightback from four down to take a half. Playing together for the first time, Alan Todd and Nick Wilson gelled and achieved the infamous dog licence – a 7&6 win for those younger readers! 2015 and 2016 Seniors’ Club Champions, Mike Metcalfe and Glen Crocker, combined to provide their usual fare and won 3&2.
Wells won, for the first time this season, a resounding victory, by 4.5 to 0.5 and moved off the foot of the league table.
The Ladies’ Interclub League team played versus Enmore at home and claimed a useful four points from the match with Jill Bocquet, Gill Magrath, Diane Ramsay and Erica Klim winning their matches.
