For the Club Captain’s Away Trip, organised by Dean Hamilton, thirty-four members descended onto both the National and Lakes courses at The Vale Resort for some competitive fun over two days.

There was a Bowmaker format the first day and 4BBB the second, with nearest the pins on both days for men and ladies. Whilst we had a bit of misty rain for part of the first day, it was very hot, and it was warm and sunny for the second day. The company, courses, accommodation and food were fantastic and great fun was had by all.

Winners on the first day were Martin Barnes, Colin Payne, Dave Gibbon and Glynis Slater and the runners-up were Steve Bocquet, Dean Hamilton, Richard Fry and Sylvia Gibbon.

The 4BBB winners on the second day were Dave Baker and Cliff Hopkins followed by Colin Mantle and Dean Hamilton. Third place went to Phil Slater and Sylvia Gibbon. Nearest the pins over the two days were: Stewart Mann, Erica Klim, Veronica Cherry and Richard Sheard.

Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to Mike Metcalfe for assisting on the competition side of things.

At last, a warm dry, sunny day for the Seniors’ match against Farrington Park. Dave Hayward and Nick Wilson won 3–2. Alan Hayes and Dave Couzens also won, 4–2. However, Wells lost the other four matches. Jeff Bruton, from Farrington, had an amazing two on the par 4 sixth hole.

Sadly, due to Covid, the Avalon League was cancelled this year. However, a few clubs decided to play their fixtures anyway as friendlies and Wells hosted Worlebury recently and played the usual 4BBB format.

A strong Worlebury team arrived on a lovely warm and dry day with just a little wind. Ashton Wylie and Peter Cherry went out first and won 2&1, helped by the need for one of the Worlebury players having to leave before the end for important firefighting duties.

Darren Burnett and Paul Cullen had a hard-fought match which was eventually halved as they won the 18th hole. Glen Crocker and Nick Carter rolled back the years to defeat younger opponents (who had two gimme 2s) 4&3 with good team work.

Bill McCollum combined his experience and accuracy with the long-hitting youth of Ben Barnett to win easily 5&4. Finally, the last match was decided with the final putt of the day on the 18th. Rory Passmore and Nick Poore thereby halved their match. Much to everyone’s

surprise, Wells therefore won 4–1 in a match played in excellent spirit but

competitively.

The Ladies Grant Cup is a competition played over two 18 hole medal rounds during the month of May. The winner was Jill Bocquet with nett 153, followed by Philippa Gowen with nett 156. Janice White
