The Wells Junior Golf Team were this year’s winners of the Somerset Development League, played against Junior Golf sides from across the county. They’ve had a fantastic year under Junior Captain, Tom Roberts, coming second (by just one point) in the Somerset Golf Junior Jamboree and reaching the Semi-Finals of the Somerset Junior Golf Knock-Out Cup.

Wells’ Stragglers played their last two fixtures of the year against Dawlish Warren and Minehead. The first game was away on a challenging course, seemingly too great, as all pairings lost! Two drives were memorable, with one shanked into the bushes before returning to the course a distance of 6ft 2ins. Not to be outdone, another member wound himself up for one of his momentous drives and missed the ball with the slipstream carrying the ball 3ft 6in. Over the two legs, Dawlish won 8–2.

Their last home match of the season was against Minehead, whose team consisted of ten of their players on handicaps of fourteen or below. Wells won 5½ – ½.

Partnerships of Gary Leigh and Pete Michell, Terry Searle and Ken Ford, Terry Pearce and Steve Porter, Mike McKay and Philip Kenworthy, Grant Rogers and Adam Holliday, all won with Jon Mackness and Craig McConnell earning an extremely good half.

Unfortunately, Weston-super-Mare Seniors were two players short for the match at Wells. After shuffling players and waiting for a lightning storm to pass, the match got underway. Piers Dalby and Peter Leverick, who played very well, won their tight match 2&1. Mike Gee and Ken Ford lost on the last. Peter Bartholomew and Dave Hayward, Seniors’ Captain, won 2&1 after Hayward birdied 14, 16 and 17. Nick Wilson and Andrew Boatswain won comfortably. Wells won 3–2.

The next Seniors home match against Long Sutton was another win, 4½–1½, with Mike Magrath and John Moxon clinching the match on the last green. Richard Sheard and John Watson salvaged a half, having been three down with four to play.
