The Ladies played the first round of the Somerset knock-out Rogers Cup match against Enmore at Mendip Spring.
Wells won 5 games to 2, with exciting finishes by Abby Gray and Tina Davies who both had to play extra holes to conclude their match. Other members of the team were Glynis Slater, Philippa Gowen, Sandy Heath, Jill Bocquet and Cath Levell.
The Ladies’ Alliance team had a home match against Clevedon on a very wet and windy afternoon. Wells won 8 points to 6 with wins for Abby Gray 6&5, Glynis Slater 6&5, Sandra Heath 1 up, and Jill Bocquet 1 up. Tina Davies and Veronica Cherry both battled hard just losing on the 18th.
Wells played Mendip in the rearranged Seniors’ Somerset Bowl match. It was brutal in a different way, with temperatures reaching 30C and high humidity abounding.
The first match featuring Tim Taylor and Gary Nutt was lost to a strong and experienced Mendip team 4&2. Steve Rowse and Nick Poore went down 4&3 in the second match.
Nick Carter and Steve Clark also lost 4&2 in the third match. Martin Barnes and Bill McCollum salvaged some pride with a 1 up win in the fourth match. Glen Crocker and Mike Metcalfe squandered a 4 up position to halve their final match against dogged opponents.
Thus Wells failed in their bid to win the competition for three years in a row, going down 3.5 to 1.5.
The Ladies’ Interclub League team won their home match against Worlebury, 4–3. It was a difficult match against an experienced team with Tina Davies, Cath Levell and Mary Harrison winning their matches and Veronica Cherry and Katrina Foote halving theirs. JW
