The Irwin Trophy was played in perfect conditions with Mixed pairs battling it out in the Greensomes format at Wells Golf Club. Only one point separated the first three pairs and on countback, Julie and Tony Blunden were second, with Janice White and Ron Johnson second, both with 38 points. Winning the trophy, with 39 points, were Diane and Peter Ramsay.
The Avalon team were away to Long Sutton and fielding a strong team, were hopeful to put in a solid performance. The day started well, with Simon Jackson and Pete Walker strolling to a 4&3 win. Debutants, James Rutt and Ivan Love, were unlucky coming down the last all square. Both had tree trouble, with Rutt having to take a penalty drop.
With Jason Huck and Mark Western struggling with form this season, it all started well, going two up after three holes, but then the inconsistencies crept back into their game and they went down 4&3.
Another new pairing was Malcolm Terry and Glen Crocker. Terry came up with back-to-back birdies during the match, helping them to a 3&2 win.
The outcome of the match was down to the last new pairing of Ian Burr and Andy Williams, who fought out a close game and gained a half to halve the match overall.
