Wells’ Seniors were pleased to be able to play their home match against Mendip in fine weather, with the course beginning to return to normal.

They were also delighted to get the first win of the season under their belts by five games to two. The pairing of two Stuarts led the way, with a resounding 7&6 win, with Stuart Gowen celebrating his first appearance in a Seniors’ match and Stuart Mann celebrating his birthday!

Other wins by Wells pairings were achieved by Bill O’Callaghan and Dave Couzens (4&3), Richard Sheard and Ian Mills (3&2) and Nick Wilson and Pete Bartholomew (2&1), while Nick Carter and Ron Hancock, and Ian McArthur and John Moxon came away with hard-fought halves.

The Mixed Friendly played at West Wilts resulted in a half, with Cath Levell and Colin Mantle and Sue Hockey and Vic Burgoyne winning their matches in fine style. Geoff Ead celebrated his birthday and he and his wife, Jenny, halved their match.

An excellent turn-out for the Seniors’ Stableford saw Graham Bingham as the overall winner with 38 points on countback. Division Two Winner: Ian Gleave 38 points, Division Two Runner-Up, Ian McArthur, 34 points. Division One Winner: Steven Payne 36 points, Division One Runner-Up, Mike Metcalfe, 36 points. Next best overall, Roger Webber, 35 points. There were five twos during the morning’s exercise.

With a hard start to our Avalon campaign away at Weston, we were not expecting too much. With little wind and the course in excellent condition, the Wells team thrived, coming in with an excellent win, 4–1.

Our usual strong pairing of Simon Jackson and Pete Walker came in winning 2&1; Mike Metcalfe and Malcolm Terry were out next, coming in with a superb win 6&5; the strong pairing of Ian Burr and George Davis came up against tough opponents, losing 4&3; Bob Lench and Jason Huck dovetailed well, sharing three birdies, winning 4&2. Last out and securing a great win for the team were Jamie Marklew and new member, Danny Wyrwoll, winning 2&1.
