Paulton Rovers’ Tomahawks netball team tallied another five points on Saturday while playing Taunton’s Vivary at home.
Hawks had lost by only two goals while playing Vivary away only a month previously, but managed to win every quarter last weekend with the support of their home crowd.
An outdoor game meant that both teams had to adapt to wet and windy conditions; gusts threated to blow shots and long passes wayward, but this proved to not phase the Tomahawks’ shooters, Cheryl and Davina, who scored seventeen goals to Vivary’s eleven in the first quarter.
The team continued to flow down the court into the second quarter, with the feeders, Darby and Jade, showing resilience and finesse to see the ball through Vivary’s defence and help increase the lead to 30–19. Half-time talks and inspiring feedback from the club members saw Hawks through the third quarter, keeping an encouraging lead of 41–28.
Expecting a step-up in intensity, the defence – Kristie, Laura and Kirsty, stayed fierce, forcing held balls and assisting the team in being able to capitalize on approximately 20% of the opposition’s centre passes throughout the game. Unfortunately, the last quarter saw an injury to Laura’s ankle, forcing her off court for the remainder of the game, but the final whistle left the score at 53–39.
Congratulations to Davina, who was voted Players’ Player of the Match by her teammates and also Player of the Match by the opposition!
Thanks to the spectators for the support and Hazel, Andy and other officials for a great game.
