The last matches of the Summer League season ended with a whimper rather than a bang for Writhlington Tennis Club, and it was hard to find any good news amongst them.

The Firsts, striving for a win of any kind which would have seen them promoted, were blown away by Thornbury’s talismanic coach, Josh White, and they now await other results to go their way.

The Seconds needed a 10–0 win to avoid relegation, but Andy Jeffery and Graham Steer slipped up in the very first rubber, albeit to a much better pairing. This deflated them, and they played even worse in the second rubber. Darren Thompson and Adam Day won their first, but went down to the good pair.

The Thirds needed an 8–2 win to jump above Central and avoid relegation, and whilst Sam Thomson and Steve Lawrence won both theirs, Captain, James Brocksopp, and Adam Benney just couldn’t get over the line.

The Fourths had a classic tussle with fellow promotion contenders, Pensford, but the required-for-promotion 8–2 win was not forthcoming, despite Callum Nowell and Ray Clarke coming oh-so-close to beating their coach’s pairing.

The end-of-season awards saw Callum Nowell win the coveted Player of the Year, George Penna the Young Player of the Year, and Ray Clarke the Old Player of the Year, with the Firsts being declared Team of the Season. Thanks to everyone for taking part this season, particularly to those (mainly Alan Gammon and Bob Sonderman) who stepped in at the last minute to play – it is really appreciated.

We now have a break of just one week before the Late Summer Leagues start on Friday, 3rd August. The League have only just sent out the contact names for the Co-ordinators, James B., Sarah D. and Andy J. to arrange the fixtures, so please reply quickly when you are contacted to play.

We have two Mixed teams organised by James, a Ladies’ Seniors (42 and over) sorted out by Sarah, and a Men’s Seniors (45 and over) arranged by me. We need lots of players to play these matches, so please put yourself down for as many as possible.
