Mendip Firsts stretched their unbeaten run to six games on Saturday, with a convincing win against Weston, while the Seconds came away from Firebrands with a frustrating 2–1 loss.

Weston-super-Mare started brightly, and took a shock lead after just five minutes. A quick break down the right was finished off with a fierce strike that flew into the roof of the Mendip net.

Mendip’s response was swift. Cherilyn Carey rattled the backboard with an excellent penalty corner strike to level the scores. Mendip gradually began to dominate the play, and were rewarded with a second goal before half-time. Charlene Taylor took advantage of a loose rebound in the Weston D to lift the ball past the Weston keeper.

Hayley Young topped off an excellent individual performance with a great score early in the second half, to put Mendip two clear. Weston worked hard to get back into the game, but Mendip’s defence was solid.

Jess Smith made some super runs from midfield, and was instrumental in creating a number of chances for Mendip to go further ahead. Eventually, Mendip did score a fourth, with Taylor putting the finishing touches to a well-worked team move.

Hayley Young and Jess Smith were jointly awarded the Player of the Match accolade. On Saturday, 11th November, Mendip Firsts travel to Clevedon to face Firebrands at 1.30 p.m.
