Mendip made the short trip to Shepton Mallet for their Second League match in Wessex Division One. Starting strong from the whistle, Mendip displayed fantastic team work, with every player giving 100%.
Mendip opened the scoring with Emily Sparkes converting the first of what was to be many short-corner goals. This was followed soon after by Connie Glover, who, after injecting the ball, received it back and scooped it into the backboard from the left post. Connie was playing out of position at left back, but showed her ability to move the ball forward, changing defensive play into attack repeatedly throughout the game.
Back at the helm, Captain, Jackie Browning, claimed Mendip’s third goal in an open-play move when she fired in her reverse-stick shot from the top of the D. Shepton briefly replied with a goal, which was quickly cancelled out when Player of the Match, Emily, linked well with her partner up front, Eva Holliwell, to make the half-time score 1-4.
In the second half, Shepton came out firing on all cylinders, and within ten minutes had scored two quick goals, putting themselves in a strong 3-4 position. However, showing true fighting spirit, Mendip crushed Shepton’s hopes like a grape, first with Sally Stanford scoring fand then Ella Constable, both from a short-corner, to put the final tally at 3-6.
