Mendip faced table-topping Clifton on Saturday, and despite an excellent first-half performance, found themselves on the wrong end of a convincing defeat.
Clifton were able to field a typically energetic and well-drilled side, but Mendip worked hard to pressurise the ball-carrier and restrict their opponents’ time on the ball. Player of the Match, Anna Swift, put in a great shift, timing her tackles well and moving the ball out of defence. The home side also created some good chances on the counter-attack, with Megan Carey coming closest to unlocking the Clifton defence.
The second half saw Mendip begin to tire, with gaps appearing between the midfield and defence, which the pacy Clifton forwards were able to exploit. Four well-taken goals without reply allowed the visitors to secure victory and leave Mendip fighting for a top-four finish with three games to play.
