Mendip were looking to continue their recent run of improving performances when they welcomed Somerset Gryphons 2nds on Saturday. Mendip didn’t disappoint, and secured a 2-0 win over the visitors.
Gryphons came out fighting with a determined forward run from the off, but Mendip weren’t caught on the back foot. Mendip soon won the ball to begin a string of well-worked passing between the midfield and forward line, a consistent feature of Mendip’s performance on Saturday.
Mendip’s reward came after ten minutes, with a set of well-timed and well-placed passes from Megan Carey to Carol Holmes and through to Amy McGowan, who slotted the ball past the Gryphons’ keeper to score Mendip’s first goal.
Mendip continued to inflict pressure on their opponents, with some excellent runs down the right from McGowan, Jackie Browning and Lowri Bryant-Young. Mendip’s second goal came from such play, finished by Carey, who confidently rolled out in front of the keeper to slip the ball home.
The second half saw Mendip’s lead remain and dominance reside, in spite of a number of injuries to the team as a result of lifted balls. Gryphons continued to look for an elusive goal, but never produced anything that could not be decisively cleared by keeper, and player of the match, Oenone Bodman-Harris.
