Mendip completed their first half of the season with a hard-fought, but on balance, deserved victory against Winscombe in this friendly fixture.
The teams were fairly evenly matched and there was no score in the first half. Mendip were able to soak up any pressure from the visitors thanks to keeper, Oenone Bodman Harris, who was in fine form and made many an athletic save. Central defender, Olivia Collins, was also rock solid at the back, making timely tackles, and it was both players who shared the accolade of Player of the Match for Mendip.
Following the break, Mendip took the lead by making the most of a poor defensive clearance from the visitors. Right wing Connie Glover intercepted the pass to drive into the D and take on the keeper. She calmly played the ball back to team mate, Carol Holmes, who finished with an unstoppable shot.
Mendip continued to apply pressure and were rewarded with another goal coming from a well worked short corner routine. After the initial strike at goal was saved, left wing Maddy Collins was on hand to sweep the ball high into the net.
The home side played out the last quarter of the match with just ten players due to injuries, but they were up to the challenge and kept a clean sheet.
Mendip are back in action again in the New Year with a local derby match in Midsomer Norton on 7th January against Shepton Mallet, 1.30 p.m. pushback.
The Mendip Ladies Firsts drew 3–3 in a friendly fixture away at Old Bristolians.
