Fine weather greeted everyone at Norton Down and the spectators hoped this would help produce a good open entertaining game of rugby. Having had a week off, the Norton team had been looking forward to the visit of fourth-placed North Dorset and putting right the performance they produced at the away fixture in Gillingham.
North Dorset had the better of the initial exchanges and quickly took a seven point lead. Norton's attacks faltered with line-outs in good attacking positions being squandered and the team coming off second best in the breakdown. As the half progressed, the home side started to put these mistakes right and started to win some good clean ball. Second row Gimson claimed his first league try of 2015, after winning the ball in a line-out and setting up a driving maul, his forwards eventually drove him over the line, bringing the score to within two points at 5–7.
North Dorset scored their second try of the match, but this was cancelled out when Captain, Matthew Denning, playing number eight, picked up at the back of a scrum and drove over to score close to the posts, closing the gap to 12–15.
Half-time came with the visitors having kicked a penalty to extend their lead to six points, 12–18.
North Dorset started the second half as they had done the first and quickly scored their third try of the game, extending their lead to 12–23. With North Dorset having the advantage of playing down the slope, the home side had to increase their work rate, especially in defence. This was led by centre, Mitchard, and flanker, Button, who stopped any further attacks by the visitors. A penalty by Taylor closed the gap to eight. Prop, Edgell, thought he had scored when he was driven over by his pack, but the referee decided he was held up.
Captain Denning scored his second try of the game as he controlled the ball at the base of the scrum, while the rest of the forwards drove the scrummage over the line. Ben Taylor added the extra points to close the gap to one point.
Norton were now in the ascendance as their fitness was beginning to show against the much bigger visiting team. With ten minutes to go, North Dorset were forced to infringe at the breakdown to try and stop a concerted Norton attack. Fly-half, Ben Taylor, stepped up to take the kick, which would put the home side into the lead for the first time – disappointingly, the ball hit the woodwork and bounced back to a North Dorset player.
The home side were now working all out for the win, showing much greater belief in their own ability to win a tight game. The whole team worked hard in this last few minutes, keeping their opposition under pressure and looking to capitalise on any mistake and just when everyone thought the game was over, the North Dorset team was forced into giving away a penalty. This time, Taylor made no mistake and slotted the kick over. The referee adjudged there was still time to restart the game. Second row, Tom Fear, rose high to win the ball from the restart and set up a maul and scrum half, Blackmore, calmly kicked the ball off the field to end the game.
