Matthew and James Hucker, from Midsomer Norton Judo Club, enjoyed success recently at the National Ranking Event on the Judo Calendar.
The brothers, from Radstock, found themselves in two separate pools of six other judokas.
Matthew won all his first five fights with an impressive mixture of two throwing techniques, two submissions, one from an arm lock and a final hold down. This took him to the finals as the highest ranked, however Matthew lost in the next round on a single shido penalty for passivity taking bronze on the day. Matthew is now ranked fifth in Great Britain.
James Hucker lost all his five fights, however he did score his first wazari (seven points) at this level and was leading two fights for a considerable amount of time, a remarkable achievement considering this was only his second time at this level of fighting.
Matthew Hucker also fought three weeks previously, winning all three fights by submissions to achieve his 4th Dan Black Belt, becoming the highest grade in the fifty-year club history, thanks to his coaches, Colin Taylor and Lee Adams. Matthew says he hopes to pass on what he has learnt and will look forward to being beaten by the new wave of young talent the club has.
