Receiving the kick-off, Norton found themselves playing up the slight slope, but into a stiff breeze. The ball was collected by Goddard, and the team immediately set about putting pressure on the home side, working their way into the opposition half. They quickly collected the first points of the day with a well-taken penalty from Ben Taylor. Saracens replied with a penalty of their own to level the score.

The pack set about carrying the ball into the strengthening wind with Fear, Jenner and Goddard leading the way.

Having set up some good attacking positions, Norton found themselves applying more pressure deep in the Saracens’ half. Joe Button was able to make a characteristic strong carry, offloading to Hooker, Mitch Rose, who was on hand to crash over from short range.

Saracens reduced the gap with a second penalty and regularly kicked to try and keep the play in the Norton half. This allowed full back, Herrin, to easily collect the ball and return it with interest.

On one occasion, Herrin gathered a Saracens’ clearance kick just outside his twenty-two; as he weaved his way up the pitch, using his pace, the gaps in the defence opened up, allowing him to score untouched. With the conversion slotted, Norton had a 6–15 lead. But Saracens finished the half with a try, to close the gap to four points, 11–15.

The Norton half-time lead had been built on a brilliant defensive performance, led and organised by centre, Martin.

Now playing with the elements, the Norton team quickly extended their lead when Herrin scored his second in the right-hand corner. With the conversion completed, Norton had a stranglehold on the game.

Winning turnover ball in their own 22m, Taylor started an attack. The ball was passed slickly through the Norton backline to winger, Church. He beat a number of defenders before popping the ball back inside to the ever-present backrow, Clark, who, running a supporting line, was able to touch down unopposed for Norton’s fourth try of the afternoon, securing the bonus point.

Norton’s final try came from a powerful scrummage; scrum half Schuster picked up at the base and scored from a classic blindside break, which took the final score to 11–34.

This was Midsomer Norton’s first win on the road, built on a well-organised defence in the face of a strong wind for the first forty minutes.
