Norton started well with runners Button, Denning, Jenner and Goddard making big dents in the visitors’ defence, but held firm. The home crowd thought centre, Martin, had forced his way over but was stopped short.
When the ball recycled, it was fed to fullback Herrin, who crossed the line, but was denied due to being held up. After a series of entrances to the visitors’ 22, prop Edgell was the first to score, as he forced his way over from some distance after ten minutes of play.
Keeping the pressure on for most of the half, it still took another twenty minutes before Norton scored again. The referee awarded a penalty, Lock, Gimson acted quickly by taking a tap penalty, and he was able to beat a few defenders to score and extend Norton’s lead.
Shortly after saw a link-up of play between the Norton Second Rows, and a break and offload from Gimson saw Captain, Fear, run in to score underneath the posts. Taylor added the conversion, which saw the score go to 17–0.
Winscombe, who had looked threatening all through the first half, started the second forty minutes well. They quickly put together an attack, and a lapse in the concentration of the home defence allowed Winscombe to open their score tally. Buoyed by this score, Winscombe closed the gap within a few minutes with a second unconverted try.
Having just joined the fray, replacement number eight, Rose, forced his way over the line, with some help from the weight of his fly half, Abbott. Taylor added the long-range conversion.
Ten minutes into the half, Norton were reduced to fourteen men when second row Goddard was yellow-carded for a high tackle. Making the most of an extra man, Winscombe moved the ball well to collect a converted try, closing the gap.
Five minutes from the close, full-back Herrin made certain of the win, scoring, for the second week running, an unaided long-range try.
Next week Norton are on the road to play old rivals, Chew Valley, looking to gain their second win away from home.
