MIDSOMER NORTON 22 CHEW VALLEY 43

Chew Valley secured top spot and automatic promotion at Norton Down, cheered on by hordes of supporters. Had it not been for ‘The Clash’, there could have been a record crowd, but unfortunately a huge chunk of the home support, along with a few fringe players, were at Twickenham.

Chew started the stronger, and scored twice before Norton responded with a penalty. This margin meant that Norton were always chasing the game and, although the commitment and desire was never in doubt, the core skills let them down in attack at times. Defensively, the cover-tackling was almost as impressive as the initial breaks and continuity that Chew provided.

Both sides made use of the driving maul effectively and carried well up-front, but the difference was in the execution in wider areas or when a break was made. Whereas Chew made breaks and capitalised with composed decision-making and no little skill, Norton too often made an average pass or wrong choice when faced with an opportunity.

The home side were just about kept at arms-length throughout on the scoreboard, and Chew ran in a couple of late tries to make absolutely sure of victory, sparking scenes of celebration from the away support. Special mention for Norton must go to Joey Button, who had an excellent game and a truly remarkable second half, and ended up with a hat-trick of tries.

Many congratulations to Chew Valley who played well, drank well, and sang incoherently after the game. Hugh Jeffery was “robbed” in a drinking contest according to himself, but Norton were certainly not robbed on the day. Chew should be proud of their efforts and style of rugby this season.

Norton play away to Keynsham on Wednesday night in the Semi-Final of the cup, so please come and support the lads. Indeed, a few more supporters would have helped us on Saturday.
