A SOMERSET rugby club has launched a public fundraising appeal after being seriously hit by flooding following January’s torrential rain.

Taunton Rugby Club’s ground was flooded after local streams and rivers burst their banks.

The club says: “Unfortunately, our clubhouse was badly affected. Several of our downstairs meeting rooms, the conservatory bar and key commercial spaces were flooded.

“While we are continuing to use any safe areas that remain available, the damage has forced us to operate with significantly reduced facilities, and some of our most important commercial spaces are currently unusable.

“This disruption has come at the worst possible time — one of the busiest weeks of our year — and has already resulted in over £10,000 in lost revenue, with further losses expected until full repairs are completed.

“The financial impact so far has been: Over £10,000 in lost revenue, £5,000 to replace damaged carpets, £1,000 in damaged stock and miscellaneous items, £2,000 for repainting and restoration work, £1,000 for essential equipment hire,

“Although hygiene issues are thankfully limited, repairs must be completed before all areas can safely return to full use.

Why we’re asking for help? We’ve never launched a public fundraising appeal like this before — not even during Covid — and asking for help does not come easily. However, the scale of the damage and the loss of income caused by the flooding has left us with costs that we simply cannot absorb alone.

“Every pound raised will go directly towards: repairing flood damage, replacing essential equipment and stock, helping us return to full operation as quickly as possible, protecting the future of a community club that serves generations of local people.
