Norton travelled over the Mendips with a much-changed side to play local rivals Wells, only to find the pitch to be extremely heavy and wet. Starting the game playing down the hill, Norton struggled to control field position, and had to defend for large periods of the half.
An early injury to Mitchard gave Ben Matthews his first chance at first team rugby in his new chosen position, centre.
Schuster did his best to get the Norton side to go forward, sniping around the breakdown, and he was well-supported by Mattick, Clark and Knight, but the home side closed the game down, depriving Norton of any territory. Captain, Fear, was forced to temporarily leave the field to receive medical attention when a cut received last weekend opened up, just before half-time. Wells kept a stranglehold on the game for the first forty minutes, and the half ended 7-0 in the home side’s favour.
At half-time the Norton team knew they were going to have to increase their efforts, but felt a win was still possible. The front row of Bicknell, Williams and Rose worked hard in the scrummage to secure the ball, before Bicknell left the field and Denning stepped up into the row. J. Rose joined the field as replacement for Clark, before both Herbert and himself became permanent with a back-row reshuffle.
Wells used the elements and their knowledge of the pitch to keep Norton pinned back into their own half, forcing them to put in some last-ditch defence right on their line. Button, Murphy and Dyer did their best to carry the ball forward, while Rideout and Abbott used their boots to relieve the pressure, to no avail.
The home side deserved the win but the scoreline of 22-0 flattered them, especially as one try was believed to have been scored from a forward pass.
